My favorite memory: I grew up in San Francisco, so we never got snow days where we got to skip school because of bad weather. But one year in the fall, it rained for so many days straight, that when we got to the school, it was literally under a foot of water. So a few of my best friends came back to my house and we had the ultimate day at home. We watched movies, drank hot chocolate, did our nails, and read magazines.

  1. How perfect to ask for fall memories! I’ve been living on the perma-sunny west coast for the last five years, but am currently taking a vacation on the east coast and the memories of fall are coming rushing back.

My father is a farmer, among many things, and is always growing something exciting: trees, rhubarb, asparagus, broccoli, arugula, peppers, anything & everything. I can remember the year he told my sister and I that he was planting an acre of pumpkins, we nearly lost our minds with anticipation. We helped him plow the field and plant the seeds; it was difficult to resist roasting them right then and there, but we had the promise of much more to come. Later we would pull the weeds and shoo the birds whenever necessary. Watching the vines creep out of the ground distracted us from our skip-ropes and secret clubs that year, but the pumpkin blossoms were the biggest delight.
It was mid-September when the pastoral beauty came to a rushing halt. We had to pick all those pumpkins! And it wasn’t warm and sunny anymore, it was cold and everything was mucky. Ugh. My dad bought us each a pair of our very own gardening gloves, as the stems were so prickly our hands would go raw after only a little work. He went ahead of us through the rows and cut the stems while we followed behind lifting the beautiful orange orbs of all sizes into a trailer pulled by my mother. Every pumpkin seemed to be better than the last, but still we were a little disheartened by the weather and would complain more than a little.
The day we finished picking my dad surprised us by inviting some of our best school friends over to pick up the last few straggler pumpkins. We were the only “country kids” among our friends, so they were thrilled to be in the pumpkin patch, and as a reward everyone got to choose their perfect pumpkin to take home. My mum had made us a pumpkin pie (hers are the best) and roasted us lots of seeds, extra salty! We gorged on all the treats with our friends while eagerly discussing our Halowe’en costumes.

    Great contest, thanks!

Fall is absolutely my favorite season of the year. I love how it changes from hot, humid weather, wearing shorts and tank tops to cool and crisp wearing jeans and cozy sweaters. When I was younger, my great aunt and uncle owned a house in Massachusetts where we would go every fall. It was the only time my entire family (which is quite small: an uncle with no kids and an aunt with 1 son) spent time all together. I’m from New York City and although the leaves change colors, fall in New York is nothing like in Massachusetts. It’s peaceful and just lovely. We would go to the local farm to go through the corn maze and pick pumpkins. Then rush home and sit at the kitchen table and carve them. It was just a less stressful place for our family to go and to actually enjoy each others company. I even got along with my brother and sister there. I loved it. My great aunt and uncle sold the house before they passed away. I think we all miss that house now.

I live in Boston and one of my absolute favorite sounds of fall is the crunch of leaves under my feet. I have a vivid memory of walking through the Boston Common park with my best friend sipping a hot coffee, inhaling the brisk, cool air and kicking up the fallen, colorful leaves beneath our booted-feet. There was not one cloud in the bright blue sky. And although for most people Autumn ushers in responsibilities and a new school year, we both felt carefree and lighthearted on this early morning excursion.

Growing up in Plano, TX the leaves didn’t change colors. When we were little, a girlfriend and I decided to paint leaves orange, red, and yellow and sprinkle them in my yard because we wanted to truly experience Autumn. After we put our faux leaves out, we asked my Mom if she had seen the leaves were changing!?! She played along, letting us think we had tricked her. Later, I found the leaves saved in my “memory box” and a note my mom wrote saying “Bridget thought she could trick us with her pretend leaves. However, due to her glitter addiction, the glitter paint made them slightly less believable!” A great memory making them, even funnier finding them later.

  5. Rachel says:

My favorite fall memory has to be when I visited my boyfriend in his first semester in college. He went to Chico State so I was thrilled that I would be able to see all of what NorCal had to offer with its beautiful green pastures, mountains, big trees, and wild flowers. It was a great weekend that we spent hiking and trying out new coffee shops and bakeries each morning. My favorite thing about that fall weekend was that we got to pretend like we were grown ups and that his dorm was our apartment.

Where I’m from, we don’t really have seasons. It’s either hot, really hot, or somewhat cool. I’ve never really experienced season changes unless I was traveling up north. However, I decided that I needed a change of scenery and moved to the Midwest (big decision for someone who is so close to their family!). I moved in the summer but by the time fall came around, I was severely homesick and ready to move back home. One day, I was having a really rough “homesickness” episode so a friend and I went to sit at a park nearby my new neighborhood to get some fresh air. As I sat on that bench, I realized the air was crisp, the leaves were changing and I thought it was the one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. There was just something so comforting and beautiful about that moment and it somehow calmed me down. I decided I was going to take it all in and just sat there to enjoy a nice, real fall afternoon with my friend.

Moving was the scariest decision of my life but I always have that one day in the fall to remind me that I made the right decision and haven’t looked back since. Here’s to making some more memories in the fall!

My favorite fall memory is going with my family to the farm stands all over the East end of Long Island (where I grew up) to pick pumpkins, bob for apples, buy cider and apple bread and apple pie, and go through the corn mazes! I always left the farm stands absolutely stuffed and exhausted. On the weekends in middle school and highschool, my friends and I would go to the “haunted” house attractions that open in October and do haunted walks through the woods, always screaming at even the silliest masks or creatures popping up along the path. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve added going wine tasting in the fall to my list, as there is a fabulous vineyard a stone’s throw from my house! There is nothing nicer than being bundled up, walking over and wine tasting and walking home to make a delicious fall meal and sit out on the deck (before it gets too cold to be out there!)

The best way to bundle up would be layering with this gorgeous trench! Thanks for the chance to win Emily!

Growing up in southern California, we didn’t have any fall weather, which has made me appreciate this season that much more now that I live in Washington, DC. My favorite fall memory is driving through rolling hills painted with a beautiful fall pallette to go apple picking in the crisp fall air.

  10. HelloCC says:

My favorite month is October and it’s also my birthday month (I’m turning 30 this year-yikes!!). My favorite fall memory occurred in October 2006, specifically Friday the 13th, in Buffalo, NY where I live. It was the perfect time where all the leaves had turned to gorgeous shades of gold, orange and red and then the storm hit. There was thunder, lightening and 2 feet of snow fell in an extremely short amount of time. There were power outages all over the area and the city shut down. I had just started dating a guy a few months before and he was at my apartment in the city when the storm hit. A driving ban was placed and he was forced to stay at my apartment for the weekend. We bundled up, grabbed a sled and walked to the nearest open store and grabbed lots of wine, candles and snacks, loaded them in the sled and hunkered down at my place for the next few days. We learned a lot about each other that weekend; he taught me poker and I showed off my cooking skills using limited resources. Two years later we were engaged and last month we celebrated our 1 year anniversary in Ireland. Although the beauty of my favorite month was cut short it was well worth it! :)

My favorite fall memory could seem very unspecific, but to resinates through me and and my childhood. Im from Washington DC and my favorite memory is simply the sights, smells, and sensations of the city in the fall. DC is a beautiful city in any season but for some reason fall just seems to be my favorite. Currently I go to school in Charleston SC, which is wonderful as well but lacks a very defined fall. Going back north for Thanksgiving break is my first experience with fall weather of the year and I look forward to it impatiently every year. Through the hot end of summer months, I dream of jeans, boots, sweaters, and scarfs. I simply can’t wait!

  12. Stacey says:

When I was young I never fancied pumpkin flavored treats much. I think my childish taste buds hadn’t bloomed yet. My parents are avid pumpkin fans and would indulge on pumpkin pie during the fall. I would settle for a bowl of whipped cream and it was honestly my favorite part of Thanksgiving. I will never forget the year I turned 16 I asked my mom to help me make a dessert for a Fall Formal and she somehow convinced me to make a pumpkin pie. It was the first dessert I had ever baked so I was obligated to sample a piece. That pie made me discover my love for pumpkin and baking. To this day, I try to make every pumpkin recipe I come across. I just can’t get enough! Pumpkin French toast, Pumpkin dip, Pumpkin soup, and even pumpkin bread pudding! (Emily, great suggestion!!) There is nothing better than the falling multi-colored leaves and a festive baked good!

Last fall, my boyfriend and I were in a bit of a rough patch. We were taking some time apart, so instead of spending everyday together, we’d only share special planned events. In October, I stumbled upon a poster for the Midtown Fall Festival and told him about it. With local eateries, drink tents, and live music I knew we’d have fun. We spent the chilly day in the city, sampling food, and finding new vintage shops. We even curiously entered into a store that has since become my favorite chocolatier in Philadelphia. Now, a year later, the boyfriend and I are fine, and I still fondly remember that date when we first shared those chocolates. You can bet we’ll be picking up another dozen (or two) when we go to the festival this weekend.

Once when I was little, maybe 7 or 8, I dressed up as Cleopatra for Halloween. While all the other girls were Disney princesses, I chose this different route. I never really like the stereotypical idea of “pretty” that those princesses conveyed, and Cleopatra was always this strikingly beautiful, exotic, and fearless woman in my mind who really inspired me. My mom made a very elegant, albeit miniature, floor length dress out of soft white fabric that was speckled with shimmering pieces of gold. She got some old metallic gold cloth and made me big cuffs for each arm and a large collar to make the costume complete. To finish, she painted classic Egyptian eyes with liquid eyeliner that made me feel like a real princess. That night, I really did feel like Cleopatra; and was the best Halloween I have ever had.

I love pulling all my sweaters out for fall weather, putting a nice oversized comfy one on, curling up with a glass of wine and a good book with the fireplace on. The change of seasons brings anew perspective, a cozy feeling–and what feels like a new wardrobe when you pull out the fall/winter clothes each year!

  17. My favorite fall memory is an early fall one and I know the exact date because I remember clearly it was September 9th 1999. I was in fourth grade and our teacher had a huge class party with cupcakes and all to celebrate 9-9-99 because nine was her favorite number. I don’t know why this memory sticks out in my mind so distinctly, but every year on the ninth of September I think back to this day and remember exactly how I felt as a 9-year-old. I remember how there was a chill in the Michigan air for the first time that year and how it felt on my face as a ran to the swings as recess. And how the beautiful Michigan leaves were just starting to change colors and how my dad picked me up from school and took me strait to a coffee shop for some hot apple cider. It is all so clear in my mind, therefore my fall always starts on September 9th when I can feel what fall felt like for a nine year old every year.

Fall: the warm sun and cool air remind me of my favorite times with my dad and lab. My father would take me pumpkin picking and i would try to find the biggest, fattest, most round pumpkin in the entire farm. Now, my father had to coax me down with some apple cider and tell me that carving the 500 ton pumpkin would not be a fun job. So I skipped down the patches and vines of orange, sometimes yellow and if unlucky green, until I found my perfect match. “Daddy! What about this one?!” “That’s a great one, hunny bunny. Good find!” In triumph I would run back with my prized pumpkin in hand and carefully place it into the grey wheel barrel.

At home, Patrick, our stocky yellow lab waited patiently for our arrival. I took my pumpkin by its rear to prevent the treasured stem from falling off and placed it on the back porch. Bad idea. Patrick, confused with the pumpkin to be his favorite toy, my basketball, took off rolling my prized pumpkin down the little hills of my back yard. The chasing commenced. “Patrick NO! NO!” My dad couldn’t help but laugh. My 10 year old self was frantic until I saw Patrick stop in his chaotic zig zag pattern to sit up and smile at me big, goofy long pink tongue and all. I giggled and patted him on the nose. The only damage was a dent to the side and the stem had broken off. It was still my prized pumpkin- a little battered and bruised but still was everything I wanted in a pumpkin.

Patrick passed away the following fall and my Father 6 after that. Im nostalgic for those times. My two favorite guys are always with me during my most special season. Autumn will be the time I marry the love of my life and it will always be the time I remember those memories fondly. My father is my sunshine, always has been and always will. In the crispest days, when the sun beats down on my jacket and face, I look up and smile because I know hes there.

  19. Jessica says:

October is my favorite month because my family always takes a week-long vacation to a country inn surrounded by an orange and red forest. We spend the week hiking through crunchy leaves, horseback riding, and nestled by the large inn’s fireplace putting together a 1000-piece puzzle. The trip includes taking a hay ride to a pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins and taking them outside around the bonfire to carve together. October is the month that brings my family together! :)
