Oh hi there! September 20th, 2011 By

I’m Elise Loehnen, the most recent hire here at Beso—and a recent Los Angeles transplant, too. Speaking of: Anyone have any thoughts about where my new (!!!) husband, Rob, and our two beloved cattens, Dot and Fletch (I refuse to acknowledge that our twelve-pounders aren’t kittens anymore), should live in the city? Considering all options…

So here’s my deal: I’m originally from Missoula, Montana, where I grew up with chickens, cats, dogs, horses, and my own “mountain.” These days, though, I seem to spend most of my time hunting around for things that are beautiful and useful, whether it’s at my favorite flea market in Connecticut (Elephant Trunk), my favorite dress-laden boutique in NYC’s West Village (Albertine), or at any number of awesome websites that I troll at all hours (more on all of these spots later). For the past decade or so, I’ve been an editor at Conde Nast in New York, primarily at Lucky Magazine, where as the Editor at Large (and ultimately Deputy Editor) I got to write guides about shopping the cities of the world, and a column about all the random (but I would maintain, covetable) things I found to buy online. Hand-beaded Navajo barrettes? Leather “Possibles” bags turned out by war re-enactors that are actually undeniably chic? Any takers?

I grew up in an editorial tradition where my job and sole duty was to canvas these cities that I wrote about as comprehensively as possible, so that readers would be armed with all of the info they could possibly need to make informed decisions about where they chose to spend their time shopping. If I missed a boutique worth writing about, that was a fail. How could anyone trust me? To that end, what was an otherwise pretty glamorous gig often turned into a deathmarch. When I wrote a guide on Paris, for example, I walked every conceivable, boutique-dotted street. And since I’m dorky enough to carry a Fitbit, I can tell you that that netted out to about 14 miles of walking per day. Easy justification for what became a two-croissant-a-day habit. When it comes to canvassing the web, what I can’t track in miles, I can track in hours: This office supply round-up that I did for Beso? It took me about 18 hours of clicking around, at a minimum. I know…martyr. :)

But the point of this ramble? You can trust that Marissa, Diana, and I will be spending our days tirelessly looking for the best stuff online so that you simply don’t have to. Best stuff sounds pretty vague, right? Well, we’ll be looking for the best stuff that we like, but we need to hear what you like, too: So talk to us, because we’re here to serve you. You can email all three of us at: help@beso.com, you can tweet us @beso, @eloehnen, @rissacontreras, @heydianaryu, you can talk to us on Facebook by liking Beso and writing on our wall, and you can register for the site and start “favoriting” the finds you love, so we can add them to our stream.

Happy shopping!

If I Buy Only One Thing This Week…
It’ll be a Marañón Necklace
September 20th, 2011 By

I was wandering around Chicago last year, scouting out its best shops, when I stumbled into Asrai Garden, a floral-centric shop that I had somehow missed in all my previous visits to the city. Shocking, because Asrai Garden is exactly the sort of store I love to shop best: Gorgeously, lush arrangements (no, not plane ride appropriate), Santa Maria Novella beauty products, impeccably cluttered walls full of flea market finds (no, impeccably cluttered is not an oxymoron!), and all sorts of strange, otherworldly gifts. One such discovery: Embroidered necklaces made by a Cuban born woman named Lorena Marañón, who lives in Colorado.

I have a deep soft-spot for embroidery anything, it’s true, but these pieces were so graphic and fractal-like, they barely looked like they derived from an old-world craft. I bought one of her simpler necklaces; and then recently tracked her down to find that she’s doing far more intricate takes, like the Guajira and the Gestapal. And yes, I think another—or two. They’re totally rad, and unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.

Under $100 Favorite:
Fancy French Cologne
September 16th, 2011 By

When you spend as much time as I do shopping around online, many things become apparently: Namely, how hard it can be to find independent online boutiques that do the under $100 category really, really well. One of the spots that does, in my opinion, is Fancy French Cologne, a little shop out of San Francisco.

I like the quirky/feminine sensibility, and I love the fact that everything looks far more expensive than it actually is. Case in point: This super pretty lace Tulle blouse, which looks great on its own with jeans, but would look equally spot-on tucked into a pencil skirt for work (same goes for this sleeveless crochet version). And for more from Tulle on Beso, click here.

Store Spotlight:
Eden Home
September 15th, 2011 By

My baby brother (who just turned three) deserves the best and safest stuff there is, and I’m determined that organic is the way to go. Eden Home is one of the sweetest websites I’ve found, and they impressively stick to “organic, all natural and eco-friendly products for your home and life”. And though I love the earthy, organic look, I also totally appreciate that Eden Home has BPA-free plastic dump trucks and other classic toys that I used to play with before the organic lifestyle was so easily accessible.

Who Just Won $1000?
Find Out!
September 14th, 2011 By

Thank you so much to everyone who entered the How Many Cute Things Sweepstakes! We’d asked you to share your favorite baby product, and your answers were amazing. Seamonster suggested buying a camera to capture sweet moments, Marcela swore by pajamas with zippers, and Shannon said the Ergo baby carrier grows with your child (“You can cocoon in the first months, gallop like a horse with a toddler and become a pack mule with an older child,” she wrote.) We learned so much and loved hearing from so many amazing women.

But, in the end, our winner is Audrey Gasteier, who wrote: “My absolute favorite item since having a baby boy in June is not specifically a baby item, but a yoga ball! I used it throughout pregnancy for exercise, during early labor before we left the house for the hospital to try to get through contractions, and I now use it several times every day with my now 10-week-old when he fusses, and it works like a MIRACLE at bringing him back from “the brink” and sometimes even rocking him to sleep! Babies that really like to move and find rhythmic motion calming seem to respond amazingly well to being bounced on it against the chest of a loving mom or dad, and I don’t know where we’d be without it! For $15, it has been a lifesaver. The ultimate multi-tasker from pregnancy through new mamahood!

What a great tip! Congratulations, Audrey, and thank you so much to everyone who entered!

Are you obsessed with paper-thin towels, too? 40% off. Never happens. September 13th, 2011 By

So generally, there seem to be two camps of people: Those who love super, super plush robes and towels, and those who prefer the Turkish variety. The latter, which are hyper-thin (but arguably just as absorbent), don’t get any prettier than the offerings at Kara Weaves, an online store that supports various hand-weaving communities in Kerala, India. Personally, I stock up on guest towels—and at 40% off, the already reasonably priced variations are suddenly even thriftier.

HAND TOWELS SET: $30.00 for 10, available at Kara Weaves.

Just In:
White Crow
September 13th, 2011 By

This independent online boutique got its start the old fashioned way. A girl from Toronto who wanted to open a store that sold trendy clothing, with limited quantity (to avoid doppelganger sightings), and offered great price points. Behold – White Crow offers all that and more. Below are a few of our favorites.

The Best Thing I Bought
Last Month: Native Shoes
September 9th, 2011 By

So at last count, I own about five pairs of Sperry Topsiders: Orange patent, lime green patent, basic brown, subtle metallic, etc. And I easily own just as many articles of footwear that intend to keep the water out: Duck boots, Hunter wellies, et al. So you can imagine my glee when I was wandering through the shops of Vancouver a few weeks ago and stumbled upon a Canadian-born hybrid: Native Shoes.

I bought the Corrado, which is like an incredibly comfortable, rubberized boat shoe, but they also turn out a pretty adorable Keds-like version, too, called the Jericho. Commuting to work in the rain has suddenly became infinitely less bulky: After all, there’s no need to stash an extra pair of shoes in my already encumbered bag, or to leave my rainboots behind at the office when the weather changes only to be stuck without at the next thunderstorm. Brilliant.

Am I the last to the
Bauble Bar party?
September 8th, 2011 By

So bear with us if we’re the last to this party, but how did the launch of Bauble Bar completely pass us by? In fact, I would still be in the dark about this incredibly well-conceived and wildly well-priced costume jewelry site were it not for Cynthia Kling—of Domino fame (as the author of “The Adventuress” column, she’s the one who constructed her own pre-fab home and meditated on important topics like clutter)—who mentioned it in passing, during a conversation about the art of packing. Her tone wasn’t all out accusatory when she asked me how I, of all people, didn’t know about the site, but it was definitely amused. Apparently, she owns so many things from Bauble Bar that she gifts them from her own neck at cocktail parties. That said, she has yet to bequeath anything to me.

No bother, though, because most things tend to register in at less than $100 (many for under $25, true story). Sold. What other awesome web launches have I somehow missed? Spill on your favorites, please…

Zara: Finally
Shoppable Online
September 7th, 2011 By

After taunting us for many, many months with the illusion of an e-commerce site (we can’t tell you how many times our throat caught because it looked like they had actually installed a shopping cart, only to realize that—psyche!—the only option was to tweet, facebook, or print your heart’s desire), Zara is finally, finally unleashing itself on the web.

We’ll most definitely be stocking up on work pants, because they tend to be cut longer than most: we’d like to try on the front-seamed trousers in sunny yellow, the pleated trousers in teal, and just because they look fun and swishy, the Palazzo trousers in cream. Meanwhile, if it weren’t too short for my personal comfort level (I have knee body dysmorphia), I’d be all over this sequined mini dress. What, pray tell, are you jumping to buy?

Guest Editor & Interview:
Rockstar Diaries
September 1st, 2011 By

Just in – Naomi Davis as our September Guest Editor! You know her as Taza from the famed blog The Rockstar Diaries.  Her sweet and easy-going diary filled with every day family life inspired us so much, we just had to invite her to share her overall wears for the fall season. Instead of the normal Q&A, we decided to mix things up a bit with a Proust-esque questionnaire. Let’s begin …

I start my day by waking up to little fingers pulling at my hair and poking my face.

If I had to only wear one color for the rest of my life, it’d be yellow.

If I had to commit to one brand, it would be Hershey’s.

The best cost-per-wear item in my closet are my Frye boots.

The best vacation spot is a tent in the living room.

I am not always patient.

The first thing I do after powering on my computer is HELLO Twitter!

If I had five minutes to apply my makeup, I’d apply NARS foundation + blush, a little M.A.C. lipstick, and play with Eleanor in the mirror the last three minutes.

I am afraid of driving through tunnels and parking underground.

If Kingsley [the family English bulldog] could talk, he’d tell me give me five scoops, not one like the vet said.

The best part about being a blogger is belonging to a community of uplifting and friendly people from all around the world and all kinds of backgrounds.

To wind down at the end of the day, my family and I read together.

If I could name my own nail polish, it would be called M&M Red.

Naomi advocates going on “bear hunts” with your family, wearing the color yellow, and never leaving home without at least 2 cameras, since remembering the little things are what it’s all about.
