Think about your favorite pair of jeans and why they’re your favorite.  It’s probably because they’re comfortable, fit well, and make you look great,  maybe even like a movie star.

Well, the jeans celebrities certainly have taken notice of is Kasil. The designer jean brand is worn by big name stars such as Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, and Jeremy Piven, among many others.

We had the privilege of chatting with Kasil’s designer and CEO, David Lim, who created the Kasil brand in 2002.  Read on!

Q&A

beso: When did you first become interested in jeans?

David Lim: I started working with denim about 8 years ago at my father’s tailoring shop.  I wanted to see if I could make myself a pair of jeans.

b: What is your background in fashion or design?

DL: My background is actually in Fine Arts Painting.  I studied at the Academy of Arts in SF, but never graduated.  I ended up coming back to my hometown of Los Angeles and working for a Hollywood costume designer.  My first project was working on the Jet Li film “The One.”

I fell in love with the process of sketching something and then being able to see something tangible from your sketches.

b: What has been the most satisfying professional moment since the launch of your brand?

DL:I always love spotting Kasil jeans in magazines on celebrities, or even when I see random people wearing them on the street.  Iit’s a good feeling to see that people like the product enough to go out and purchase it.

b: Did you always know you were going to eventually make a denim collection?

DL: Not at all – I actually started out making myself a pair of jeans, then started making custom jeans for some of my father’s clients, and eventually that turned into designing a collection back in 2003.

b: Do you have plans to expand your collection beyond denim?

DL: Yes, right now for fall we’re planning something big.  Can’t reveal it yet, but I’m sure our fans will like it.

b: What inspired you the most for your upcoming collection?

DL: Inspiration comes in many different shapes and forms.  Really hard to pinpoint but if I had to, I like to look at what people are wearing and see where the direction is going.

b: What jean trend are you trying to stay away from or wish would end?

DL: Bell bottoms need to stay in the ’70s!

b: What is the secret to finding the perfect pair of jeans?

DL: The easy way is to just try on our brand, the hard way is to try on multiple brands and get tired in the dressing room.

b: What jeans are you wearing now?

DL:I’m wearing our Selvedge jeans, coming out for fall 2010.

b: Who is your dream celebrity to be seen in your jeans?

DL: For women’s right now would be Olivia Wilde. I’m a fan of the TV show House.  For the guys, Brad Pitt already wears our jeans.

b: What are some denim dos and don’ts?

DL: Don’t wear denim jackets with denim pants.  Do wear jeans that fit you right and don’t buy just for the brand name.

b: If you have to hem your jeans, do you keep the original hem or not?

DL: Original hem.

b: How did you get involved with your charity work?

DL: A few years ago I lost a very close cousin to Stomach Cancer who was my age and left behind a wonderful wife and newborn daughter – very tragic and heartbreaking.

Life is short and we really need to help out those who need the most help.
