Two years ago, after a particularly harsh New York City winter, when bone-chilling winds that threatened to blow you into oncoming traffic were persistent and crappy, I decided I wasn’t going to take it anymore. And so in the midst of November (and pointedly right in advance of my birthday) I marched myself to Tribeca’s Tents & Trails to throw my wallet into a Canada Goose jacket. The brand wasn’t particularly well-known then (it’s really boomed in the last 18 months or so, and spawned a lot of fakes on the market, so buy from a reputable retailer), and so the store was wiped clean. They literally didn’t have a single Canada Goose jacket left on the floor in my size. And there were none to be found online, either. (I even prevailed on the company, who reiterated that they were sold-out everywhere).
I shivered my way through that miserable winter, and snapped up a coat as soon as they became available in late summer, and I have never, ever, passed a more blissed-out January/February. It’s impermeable to wind and snow. It has a generous, face-encompassing hood. It has loads of fleece-lined pockets for cold hands. I never complained again. I know it has a steep price-tag, but let me assure you that you will never want for another warm winter jacket: I can’t imagine how many coat variations I would have continued to buy searching for something to steel myself against winter. I may live in LA now, but my parents are in Montana, and my mother-in-law is in Maine, so I’ll most definitely be busting it out. I have the Expedition, but there are less intense iterations out there, too. (Meanwhile, if you need something less intense, check out our awesomely comprehensive coat guide!)
