Light Summer Scarves All for Under $50!

Summer has always been my favorite season: Bike-rides to the beach, barbecuing, lots of fresh berries (my favorite), and easy-breezy dresses to be had. The one caveat is the secret pact that all office buildings seem to make with one another to blast their air conditioning at full-throttle until Labor Day rolls around. My saving grace in summers past have been gauzy scarfs that I not only use around my neck, but also spread on my lap like a mini-blanket. Plus, since I live near the water, it’s an easy throw-on for cool nights. Here, 12 of the prettiest scarves that’ll keep me cozy while I’m at work, and all for under $50!

An Outfit You Can Actually Wear: Yesterday, Today, 10 Years From Now

This whole look is so timelessly beautiful, whether it was daring dress in the ’40s, or slightly conservative today, she can still wear this combination for years to come and garner compliments the whole way through. High-waisted pants make legs look miles long (covetable in any era), and though the shirt is a bit covered up, the polka-dots say otherwise (hello, youthful and fun).*

The City of Style Book Party—And The Stylish Women Who Showed!

We hosted a party for Beso Contributing Editor Melissa Magsaysay‘s brand new book City of Style at 3.1 Phillip Lim last night, and were blown away by the legions of turned-out Angelenos who showed. You Guys…It’s Happening: Bridal Uggs

As if Uggs weren’t divisive enough (remember this hilarious video?), the Australian based company just launched a wedding capsule collection with the tagline: “Your Wedding Just Got Cozier.” The three items run from $70 (for a fluffy flip-flop) to $225 (Uggs with iridescent sequins); for that amount of money, might I suggest something like this? Unless you’re getting hitched on a ski lift, I’m hard pressed to find a place for these…and if you do buy them, for what appropriate occasion will you ever sidle into a pair of shiny silver Uggs with a huge diamond button?

Peplum Tops: Totally Feminine Without Being Overly Girly

Kristen Wiig got a lot of flack for her peplum moment on SNL last week, and I’m positive there would have been much less commotion surrounding her dress if there was a color swap (that is, into something that isn’t the exact shade of her skin) especially because the soft folds kind of uhm, look like skin. Stick to peplum tops in unmistakably non-dermis hues and textures (lace, white, stripes), plus you’re forced to wear a bottom which will break up your look and any notion that you’re wearing something Hannibal Lecter might enjoy. My favorite thing about peplum is that despite it’s feminine folds, it’s really architectural and looks tailored and strong. Though there aren’t too many girly things in my closet, peplum always manages to makes me feel like a more dressed up version of myself.

I remember a time when all mens’ swim trunks were 1. black, 2. super-duper long, and 3. just heinous and unimaginative, overall. I love that this summer, there are some great alternatives to trunks past in the form of ombre, floral or color-blocking (and a standout graphic tessellation that kind of reminds me of a decorative pillow (a good thing)). These special guys wax modern, and are cool enough to punch up any plain ol’ tee.

Introducing…Cynthia Kling!

By the time I actually met Cynthia Kling, I felt like I already knew her, thanks in part to her stint at Domino Magazine, where she wrote about everything from entertaining annoying house guests to assembling her own pre-fab house. Cynthia is like the wacky and wonderful aunt we all wish we had—the one who lets you borrow her awesome vintage dresses, and then sits you down for a perfect, light, thrown-together lunch from her garden and serves up some harsh but hilarious realities about dating and jobs and the mundane bits of your days. She’s obsessed with flowers and plants (hello indoor gardening, hello flower arranging) and other matters of the home (bright kitchen goods anyone?)—but all in an informal and wonderfully haphazard way. Life just comes together beautifully when Cynthia is around. So it kind of goes without saying that I’m thrilled she’s on board to offer some funny insight into living well.

Appropriately, Cynthia is hanging out here at Sissinghurst, a mecca to gardeners everywhere.
