Ann Brady and I floated around each other for awhile at Lucky: We both spent a majority of our time on the road. She was in the fashion department, and often in, oh you know, St. Bart’s or Tulum, shooting swimsuit guides and 14-page fashion stories with Andrea Linett. I was usually wandering the streets of various cities writing up boutiques and flea markets. (You can decide who had the better deal.)
It wasn’t until I started picking up the occasional cover story that we found ourselves in the same place at the same time. While writing cover stories might sound glamorous, it actually requires sitting in a giant studio for 8 hours, drinking about six Diet Cokes, and over-eating, all while watching the starlets get trafficked through hair and makeup (and yes, writing down what they eat and say). There’s a formal interview and all, but I was sent to the shoots to try to catch them in exciting—i.e. quotable—moments. I just don’t like spying on people. So Ann often did it for me. But in a nice way! (We were always nice at Lucky.) Since Ann was helping the cover girls get dressed, and pulling things for them to wear, she would recount anything that might be usable. (I.e., Fill in the blanks cover star will only wear strapless. Or hates yellow.) Exciting, right?
But while the shoots might have been unremarkable, Ann and I had plenty of awesome times back at the hotel bar, eating delicious snacks, sipping on overpriced wine, and making up for all those missed times in the office back at 4 Times Square. Essentially, Ann is awesome: Beyond having great taste in clothing, she knows a ton about tech, and even more about beauty (all those hours paying attention at shoots clearly paid off). And she’s also just a lady: Not the sort of lady who wears nightgowns to bed, but the sort of lady who is both kind and cool, without being standoffish at all. Ann’s going to be writing about beauty, and fashion, and everything in between for Beso—and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
