When I was still in college, my friend Regina exposed me to the launch issue of Lucky (she’s a trail-blazer, right?) while we were waiting for our turn in a (ahem) tanning salon. (For some reason, I went to the tanning salon a few times my senior year because I was convinced it could counteract Seasonal Affective Disorder…clearly, I didn’t learn much in college.) ANYWAY: There I was, flipping through a magazine that would ultimately become my home, when I came across a tiny item about a kiosk of sorts, on NYC’s canal street, where you could get a little slab of gold engraved with a photo. I think it was the pick of Gina Kelly, the fashion editor at the time (now the fashion director at Seventeen), and it was equal parts weird, and cool, and kitschy, and kind of beautiful. I was clicking through the pages of Beso today, looking for lockets from Doyle & Doyle, when I came across this photo-engraved necklace from Ginette NY, which is a very pretty jewelry line with a shop in the West Village. Spendy, but so pretty…particularly because the colors are muted. They’re definitely not muted on these very affordable versions from Pictures on Gold, but they have some appeal, too (I mean…they can contain a family of 7!). Is it something you can ever imagine doing?
