I like thrift shopping because it always feels like a treasure hunt, but I have to be in the mood for it. There are days when I just don’t just don’t want to dig through piles of dish towels just to get to the one cool cape I can say I got for a dollar. Oh, and I make sure I wash that stuff, because bed bugs are free with gift of purchase at some of those places. So, when I don’t feel like being the Indiana Jones of dead people’s stuff, and I’m willing to pay retail, I go to stores that know how it’s done. Brand spanking new stuff that requires no digging and no fuss. One said store is Penelope’s in Chicago. They have a great eye for reasonably priced items (for men and women) that really never go out of style. The other plus is that you can shop them online and not freeze your ass off.
Now I don’t know how to describe the feeling of going into a store where I like everything AND can afford it, but let me try: You know how you’ll try vegan chicken wings once and they look like the real thing and then you’re all psyched about it because you’re pretending to be someone who eats healthy and gives a crap about their personal appearance? That’s the only way I can describe it. Sorry. But enough of this chatter. Time to let the pieces speak for themselves.
Clockwise, l-r: FIDELITY BY GERALD & STEWARD ORANGE DUFFLE CAPE, $218.00, Penelope’s; JD FISK SAND FRANKLIN BOOT, $178.00, Penelope’s; PENFIELD KASSON JACKET, $195.00, Penelope’s; SESSUN BLUE BEAUVOIR DRESS, $195.00, Penelope’s.
