A few years ago I went to Madrid and made it a point to buy myself some espadrilles at the oldest espadrille shop in the city. Handmade and expensive. For some reason I picked polka dot platform lace ups. I don’t know if all the ham got to my brain, but that’s what I chose. Needless to say, they have been sitting in my storage unit since then. I sort of wrote espadrilles off until I found some at a surf shop called Mollusk in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (also in SF and Venice, CA). Soludos manages to make espadrilles look less like gauze bandages tied together with rope and more like a great slip on shoe. The patterns are cool and they’re comfortable. I should’ve taken a page out of their book years ago in Madrid, rather than having that poor old Spanish man spend hours on a shoe only an environmentalist clown could wear. Soludos are definitely the way to go (J.Crew caught on a while back and collaborated with them) and totally affordable.
