The Jewel Box: Shape Up! February 10th, 2010 By

Shopping for jewelry should be just as fun as shopping for shoes and handbags.  Aside from seasonal trends, start incorporating jewelry that expresses your individuality and tells a story.  There are more fun and whimsical shapes and designs than ever before!  The great thing about jewelry is that you can never have too much. Take a look in your jewelry box and figure out what’s missing.  Update your collection with items that inspire you.  Below are pieces that remind me of something I love, and also reflect my personal style.

Accessory Style File: Where the Wild Things Are October 4th, 2009 By

Hollywood is the master of cross-promotion. If a potential movie can’t be turned into a video game, TV show, book series, cartoon, board game and Dixie Cup, studio execs aren’t interested. Which makes me a little surprised by the overall dearth of Halloween “Where the Wild Things Are” costumes. I mean, Spike Jones’ long-awaited adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved book even comes out on October 16th, and what’s cuter than little Max or those giant, fuzzy creatures? Try to tell me that doesn’t tap into your deepest sense of nostalgia. Just try, I’ll wait…

But where are the costume tie-ins – either for adults or children? Online, just about the only thing you can find are directions for homemade Wild Things creature creations. And as cool as those are, I neither have mad paper mache skills, or three spare months on my hands to prep for Halloween.

Perhaps recognizing the void, and the fact that many hipsters have a rare combination of nostalgia and large amounts of disposable income on their hands, Opening Ceremony has stepped in with their fall line of “Where the Wild Things Are” dresses, jackets and jewelry.

Where the Wild Things Are Dress

Like this faux fur dress, which runs for $460 and will be a big hit at any Flinstones-themed Halloween party you attend this year. This model looks fantastic, but I kind of have to wonder who could pull this dress off without a 10-foot monster standing next to them?

Not to leave the guys out, there’s also a men’s fake fur sweatshirt to allow you to tap into your inner Max. It really is adorable, and I bet it’d be a big hit at certain autumn parties that groups of people cuddling. It retails for $460.

However, I wouldn’t recommend wearing this faux fur jacket to the sports bar to cheer on your team this Sunday. Also, I see pricey dry-cleaning bills in this jacket’s future.

Feather Cuff

There’s also a feather cuff accessory that will be certain to be commented on. $575 isn’t too much to remind yourself of your favorite childhood memories, is it? So the question is this:

Is the “Where the Wild Things Are” fashion collection a charming demonstration of hipster nostalgia/charm, or merely self-absorbed ridiculousness at outrageous prices?

Tell us what you think!

Incidentally, Spike Jones’ “Where the Wild Things Are” opens October 16th.
