Have you noticed that fall handbags have taken on a new look with gunmetal hardware and embellishments?  The muted tone of gunmetal adds a sleekness that is far more subtle than gold or silver.  After spending over an hour browsing on beso, I narrowed my favorites to five gunmetal bags, each with different silhouettes that are very versatile.  Which is your favorite?

Top 5 Summer Staples May 13th, 2010 By

I was a summer baby, born in July.  It must have been the alignment in the stars because I have an innate pull toward the summer months.  As the weather begins to warm and vacations are in the last stages of planning, I am beginning to feel my favorite time of year creeping up.  Here are my Top 5 Summer Staples:

1. I always wear SPF 30 on my face.  Mineral versions like this Peter Thomas Roth powder with SPF 30 are a great alternative to heavy sunblock creams that can cause breakouts.  I used to use these sunblock creams, but after applying makeup it proved too many layers for the summer heat.  Now, I just brush this on in the morning and throw it in my purse for touch-ups as necessary!

2. Chlorine can damage your hair, skin, and bathing suit.  Kiehl’s makes the best product — Swimmer’s Cleansing Rinse for your hair and body.  It’s gentle enough to use on your swimsuit, too!  It neutralizes the chemical and keeps your hair from turning green, skin from drying out, and your favorite suit from deteriorating!  If you spend your summers in the swimming pool, this is a must have.

3. Everyone is in search for the easiest way to get that tousled, beachy wave look without looking like a sloppy mess.  I use a 1 ½” barrel curling iron and wrap 2” sections (or larger if I am in a rush) to create big, loose waves. Then I flip my head over, shake it out, finger comb, and finish off with this a few sprays Frederic Fekkai’s amazing Beach Waves Spray. It has an amazing smell, seals/protects hair from the sun, and gives you that California surfer girl look all day.

4. I am dying to get a hot new bathing suit this summer.  I’m really want to get a plunging v-neck like this halter one-piece by Carmen Marc Valvo. While it’s still very sexy and on trend, no need to worry about getting a bunch of funky tan lines across my midsection.  This suit exudes confidence and personal style — I can already envision myself cocktailing by the pool!

5. Lastly, I love this silk coverup from Diane von Furstenberg. Maxi-coverups were hot this season on the runways, and make it easy to go straight from lounging to lunch or dinner. This resort piece is hot, and the lioness in me can’t resist the leopard-print and embellishments!  If you’re not as bold, try something more subdued (but still sultry) like this tunic from Calvin Klein.

3 Ways to Wear Shorts Right Now April 10th, 2010 By

Here in Los Angeles, the weather has somewhat been unpredictable with cold rainy skies one day and warm sunny days the next. Store windows are taunting those of us who just can’t wait for summer with their fantastic colorful displays of airy fabrics and chic shorts just like the ones we saw coming down the runways during Fashion Week 2010

I don’t know about you, but I think shorts are swiftly proving to be a wardrobe staple. They can equally be dressed up or down for night or day and in this case, can be worn in warmer or colder weather. If you’re like me and you’ve got a pair of shorts you’ve been dying to wear but can’t wait for Mother Nature to come around, here are three easy ways to wear your favorite pair of shorts right now:

Shorts Worn With Leggings, Opaque Tights, Tall Boots and Booties

Black shorts paired with opaque tights and tall boots; grey shorts paired with leggings and booties

How To Wear Shorts In Colder Weather: Layer Away
The key to wearing shorts in colder weather is to layer, layer, layer! Start with a pair of leggings or opaque tights under your favorite shorts. Next, throw on a base layer such as basic long sleeve jersey knit in fun print like stripes. You are now ready to layer away! Find a long loose tee and put it on over your long sleeve and wrap a belt around your waist to show off those curves.

How To Wear Shorts At Work
If your place of employment doesn’t enforce a strict dress code policy, a pair of satin shorts like these Diane von Furstenberg Raimer cuffed satin shorts worn with black opaque tights underneath make a perfect alternative to a skirt or trouser pants. To keep your ensemble work-appropriate, tuck a nice blouse into your shorts and pull on a cropped vest like this G-Star Princeton Gilet vest. Or, polish off your outfit with a structured blazer. Boots will work just fine for business wear, but for that extra edge pump it up with suede peep toe booties.

Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel, $30

Dare To Go Bare(legged)
Sexy legs deserve to be seen so if you’re the fearless type that can bear the cold weather with your superhuman abilities, by all means, ditch the leggings and tights altogether and show off those legs, girl! But not before reaching for a bottle of self tanner of course! For a natural glow, try Clarins self tanning instant gel. Though it is known to have a funny odor (most tanners have a smell due to a chemical called dihydroxyaceton, aka DHA or glycerone), this self tanner gives your skin a natural day-at-beach radiance.

Editor’s Picks: Pretty in Punk December 14th, 2009 By

Nanette Lepore's Divinity Dress

Nanette Lepore's Divinity Dress

With party season upon us, it is time to start putting together outfits for the different get-togethers and events we have planned.  The holiday season gives us a chance to really dress up and express our style.

This season, I’m loving outfits that are a little bit pretty and a little bit punk.  Leather and lace, studs and ruffles, the juxtaposition of frilly and fierce is what takes an outfit from ordinary to spectacular.

BCBGMAXAZRIA Studded Clutch

BCBGMAXAZRIA Studded Clutch

This studded clutch from BCBGMAXAZRIA is the perfect complement to a pretty ruffled dress like Nanette Lepore’s Divinity Dress.  This Alexis Bittar Scaled Cuff will give your outfit some extra kick.

A lace dress and leather OTK boots will keep you warm and stylish.  We like Diane von Furstenberg’s Hasina Dress. The super-short hemline is sure to look good with even the tallest OTK boots (you should always show a little skin).  Wear this outfit with some Han Cholo Spike Earrings for a little extra edge.

One of the best parts of mixing these two styles is that you can stay true to each other.  Wear your lace dress with strappy sandals for a wedding in the spring or your OTK boots and studded purse with skinny dark jeans and a tank on a Saturday night out.  In this economy, it pays to have clothes that multitask!
