Left, Hudson Jeans Collin Jeggings and right, Paige Denim Verdugo Jeggings

Denim leggings are the new comfortable-yet-sexy item that we’re craving right now.  With all the comfort of stretchy leggings, jeggings (as this jeans-leggings hybrid is also called) offer the classic, versatile styling of skinny jeans.  The first step to pulling off this trend is picking the right denim legging for you.  Dark styles that slim and lengthen are my favorite.  The Hudson Jeans jeggings, top left, and Paige Denim jeggings, top right, are a great pick for all body types.

Once you’ve found your perfect pair of jeggings, how will you wear them?  Here are three ways to incorporate denim leggings into your wardrobe:

The Sophisticate
The sophisticated look is all about dressing up the jeggings, like you would dress up jeans.  Add a pair of sleek pumps and a tailored blazer over a long top.  Platform heels are a great choice.

The Casual Classic
The casual classic look is very Audrey Hepburn, swapping in black denim leggings for black cigarette pants.  Add a long, nautical striped top and a pair of cute ballet flats, like Tory Burch’s Reva or Steve Madden’s Heavenly Flat.

The Girl Out on the Town
For a night out, add to the sexiness of the sleek silhouette of denim leggings with a sparkly top and our favorite hot shoe, the OTK boot.  On a tight budget?  Check out this sequin tunic from a.n.a., it’s just $24.99!  If you want less shimmer, try the Zoa Sequin Panel Tunic.  The sequin design is limited to one shoulder/sleeve.  It would look great with some silver bangles or a cuff bracelet.

What’s New: Purple Mania March 12th, 2010 By

It’s finally Friday, which means it’s time to spend that paycheck on new goodies! The first things I started searching for this morning were brightly-colored pieces to get me in the spring spirit. Check out my fab finds in my favorite color of the moment, purple!

Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Wushishi' Sweater, $228

A long, lightweight sweater is always nice to have hanging in your closet because you can throw it over a pretty camisole or a graphic tee. I found this MARC by Marc Jacobs sweater in bright purple and fell in love with the diamond-shaped design detailing and the long length of the sweater.

Purple Crocodile Stretch Butterfly Belt, $22.00

Spring dresses can look more polished with the help of a belt at the waistline. I like this belt mainly because of the big butterfly in the front, and I like my accessories to catch attention!

Jessica Simpson Esis Flats, $27.99

Next I found these Jessica Simpson flats in raspberry. These flats would add a pop of color to any jeans and t-shirt ensemble.

Ann Taylor LOFT Purple Hair Pin Set, $12.50

To add a bit of flair to your hair this spring, I found this Ann Taylor LOFT hair pin set with purple detailing. Use these pins to pull back your bangs, or to add interest to a bun or ponytail.

For obvious reasons I advise you not to wear all of these items at once.  However, use your own judgment to incorporate the right splashes of color.  Check out other great new purple things and many other great colors too at beso!

Shoe Cravings: Mega-High Heels March 2nd, 2010 By

Who doesn’t love mega-high heels? They may not be as comfortable or easy to walk in (and most of us aren’t as graceful as Heidi Klum), but you’ll definitely look and feel sexy in these seriously hot shoes.

All over the runways, mega-high heels are stealing the show. We’re seeing metallics, snakeskin, neutrals, see-through, animal prints and feather-trimmed. From pumps to sandals, peep toe boots, to my favorite – the hidden platform, the higher the better. Wear these killer heels with a sophisticated suit, pencil skirt or cocktail dress, and you’ll turn heads all over town. Here are a few pair of really special mega-high heels:

1. Casadei Double Platform Pump, $675 at National Jean Company

Shop under $100: Women’s Boots for Spring February 23rd, 2010 By

If you aren’t ready to give up wearing your favorite boots, then you will be happy to know that you can keep some of them in rotation through spring!  Peep-toe, ankle boots and cowboy boots can be worn as the seasons change.  There are many colors and styles to choose from for under $100 at beso.  Peep-toe boots are hitting stores in both high heels and flats, which can be dressed up or down.  Pair ankle boots with a spring dress and leggings.  As it gets warmer, toss the leggings!  Cowboy boots returned last fall and are still popular for spring.  I love how the light color cowboy boots look rugged yet feminine at the same time.  Regardless of the style you choose, have fun mixing your spring wardrobe to find the look you like best!  Below are some of my fabulous finds:

Designer Profile: Jessica Simpson Shoes February 4th, 2010 By

Jessica Simpson and Some of Her Designs

No matter what you think of her music/acting career or the scandals about her body shape, it’s hard to deny that Jessica Simpson is insanely talented when it comes to designing shoes.

When Jessica Simpson debuted her shoe line a few years ago, I decided I would not like it on principle alone. But I oohed and aahed over each pair I saw — and then I realized she was the designer.

I guess principles are made to be broken.

Seriously. She’s become one of my favorite designers. AND her shoes are absolutely affordable, and often on sale!

The Delanie Shoe -- Modern but Versatile

These are the “Delanie.” Suede upper and 4″ heels of pure hotness — especially when paired with a little black dress.

The Amona Shoe -- Sexy Style in Leather and Suede

This one is the amazing Amona pump, shown in suede. I like them with spring’s capri styles. I would also like them in my closet.

jessica simpson 3

The Delia Shoe -- Simple but Fun

Want to add a little snazz to your stems? How about these super-cute Delia iridescent Mary-Janes? Although they come in additional colors, I love this green. I also love the playful-but-dressy take on the classic Mary-Jane shoe.

The Brenda Shoe -- Classic High Heels

But if you prefer your traditional to stay that way, you might want to take a look at these black Brenda pumps. Simple, timeless, elegant. You will be able to wear these with anything – from jeans to dinner dresses – forever; they will never go out of style.

jessica simpson 4

The Straw Shoe -- Slingbacks with Added Oomph!

With the Straw shoe — shown here in black patent — the simple black slingback gets a major upgrade, in both style and elevation! These would look great with knee-length skirts and dresses. I’m also picturing them with wide-leg slacks.

The Ginlane Shoe Speaks for Itself!

Or if you’re the kind of girl who enjoys blazing her own way entirely, you’re going to love the “Ginlane,” in either silver or gold (shown). Strut your stuff in just about anything – these will provide the perfect finish for almost any outfit. Personally, my choice would be to pair these (in either color) with a black button-down and a pair of jeans and a small metallic clutch. They are also available in black, but I love the metallics more.

The Severe Wedge -- My New Favorite Shoe

And for those ladies who are looking to strut their sexy side… these shoes – the “Severe Wedge” – are my new obsession. Can you believe they’re by Jessica Simpson?! I knoooow! Me neither! See how great she is?! Leather upper. 1″ wooden platform, 5″ wooden heel, and incredibly architecturally interesting, too! I’m getting a pair in black. To start with. Then we’ll see what happens.

Whatever your passion in fashion – simple, elegant, traditional or avante-garde – Jessica Simpson shoes deliver!

Top 5: Oversized Houndstooth October 28th, 2009 By

Alexander McQueen Houndstooth Dress

Alexander McQueen Houndstooth Dress

This fall many designers take the classic houndstooth pattern and make it modern. Here are our top 5 picks for the best use of oversized houndstooth:

The Alexander McQueen houndstooth dress is amazing.  The silhouette is ultrafeminine and the houndstooth pattern varies in size to give your curves extra oomph while slimming your waist.  The high ruffled tie collar and ultrafine merino wool fabric keep the dress winter appropriate while the sleeveless design lets you show some skin. It is a little out of my price range at over $1500, but if you can afford it the dress is definitely money well spent.

This Jessica Simpson houndstooth dress is a steal at $118.  Paired with black tights and a pair of red cut-out booties or sandals, you’ll look like you spent a whole lot more.

Houndstooth is a classic pattern for coats and these three styles make it modern.  This Michael Kors houndstooth coat is less than $200 at Zappos.com.  The Via Spiga Carso coat, $150, and the Hilary Radley houndstooth coat, $300, are both on sale at Bluefly.

Editor’s Non-Pick: Lindsay Lohan’s Disastrous Ungaro Collection Debuts October 8th, 2009 By

Lindsay on the runway

Lindsay Lohan on the Ungaro Paris Runway

Two women on the runway. One is a part-time actress and full-time punchline who was hired as an “artistic advisor” to the renowned French fashion house, Ungaro.  Many of us have been watching Lindsay Lohan’s career descend in a self-inflicted, slo-mo free fall for the past 3 years.

The other striking woman is Spanish designer Estrella Archs. The pinched look on her face confirms her own professional implosion, but compacted over the course of one evening rather than 3 years: the debut of Ungaro’s Fall fashion line, inspired by and co-designed with the star of the critically acclaimed I Know Who Killed Me.

Apparently, the French had merely been taking note of the frequency of Lindsay’s photos being plastered in the US press, rather than reading the actual text to learn why her image is constantly in the tabloids. Even respected Parisian fashion houses can be deaf and dumb to the greater cultural dialogue.

But am I just picking on Lindsay because of her very public troubles? Perhaps her collection presages the arrival of a major new fashion talent. Let’s see…

Lindsay Lohan's Ungaro Collection

Lindsay Lohan's Ungaro Collection

Here we have a series of bizarre outfits that Robert Palmer video babes have too much pride to be caught dead in. And then there’s that odd red and white number that’s somewhere between cottony fish scales and a Valentine’s Day date from hell.

But maybe it’s just me. Maybe I simply don’t understand fashion, style or the inimitable genius of a quixotic star.

So here are some selected quotes from smarter fashion minds than myself:

  • The London Daily Mail:  “Fashion critics… looked aghast at Lohan’s bra tops and stripper-inspired nipple pasties.”
  • LA Times: “Fashion insiders suggesting it was an insult to anyone who had ever really worked in design, it had to have been the walk of shame to end all.”
  • NYTimes: “(Lohan’s) arrival was greeted by critics as if a McDonald’s fry cook had been installed as the chef of a three-star Michelin restaurant.”
  • WSJ: “Some models appeared on the runway with glittering heart-shaped pasties on their nipples, worn under blazers. Others wore the pasties on their foreheads.”

Yes. Pasties on foreheads. I couldn’t make that up if I tried, and I can’t top that.

But does this mean that celebrities shouldn’t have fashion lines? Certainly not. While there are high-profile failures like this one, there have been many successes: Jessica Simpson is now more admired for her line of shoes than her country warbling, Justin Timberlake has a popular line of high-end jeans, and the Olson Twins remain richer than most people not named Warren Buffet. So there’s definitely room for the intersection of celebrity and style in a way that benefits consumers and fashionistas alike. We will certainly feature many of those examples on our blog, and FashionIndie opines on some of the best celebrity fashion lines out there.

This, however, will not be one of those examples:
