Party Shine
December 27th, 2011 By

As we all know, last weekend was Christmas, next weekend is New Year’s Eve. When it comes to dressing for the occasion, the two are polar opposites. Christmas is when I normally sit around in what can only be described as a depressed middle-aged divorcee’s outfit of choice (fleece everything), and on New Year’s I pretty much look like an extra on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. To me, it’s the only time of year to wear a ridiculous amount of glitz. After all, coming off of spending that much time with family, you need all the shine & sparkle you can get to detract from “dead on the inside” look on your face. Seriously, if  you’re a fan of Twilight, might I suggest coming over to my family’s for the holidays? They’ll gladly suck the life out of you, vampire-style.

But I digress. This is about celebrating and letting loose. This is about walking around, drink in hand, looking like confetti with a pulse. I’m talking, of course, about sequins. My New Year’s Eve textile of choice.

Matters of Time
December 22nd, 2011 By

We are fast approaching the countdown to the New Year, so I was inspired to write about watches. Soon we’ll all be celebrating 2012 and, if you’re like me, another, all-too-familiar twelve months of procrastination. Now, I’ve been meaning to get a watch for a while. I’m always late to things, and my excuse has often been that I lost track of time. Yes, I’m 100% aware that cell phones come equipped with a clock, but apparently the people I’m late to meet aren’t smart enough to pick up on that, so let’s move on. I’m gonna go ahead and tell people I got a watch as a sign of courtesy and “the new me” (laughable). The reason I haven’t gotten one until now is that I find them either too expensive, or too chintzy—which brings me to these afforadable, sturdy, men’s styles in basic black. They’re sleek and simple, sort of like myself…notice how I didn’t add punctual to that list of qualities.

Enlisting in the Army Coat
November 21st, 2011 By

The other night I went coat shopping with my mom because the alternative was to sit around by myself for three hours. For some reason, we do this every winter. I love the woman, but she and I have very different taste in clothing. She prefers the “tailored” look, while I dress in what I like to call a “floppy boot” style. Needless to say, shopping together goes as smoothly as a Real Housewives reunion. Now, let me explain the “floppy boot” look: You know how there’s always some British girl in fashion magazines that’s super tall and wearing some short floral dress with tights, big floppy combat boots and an oversized army coat that probably belongs to her equally thin boyfriend who is probably in some band called “Light Laser” or some shit? Although I’m as far removed as they come from that kind of person (I doubt she collects beer koozies), I do adhere to that aesthetic. Especially when it comes to the army coat. I’ve tried embracing other types of jackets, like I did this Saturday with mom, but I always end up buying some variation of the army style. Part of it is habit, and part of it must be that I’m still bitter that my mom dressed me like a Von Trapp for most of my childhood. I was bound to rebel somehow, so maybe looking like I enlisted is my way. With that, here’s my homage to my go-to jacket of choice.

The Drunk Stripe
November 14th, 2011 By

I can’t buy another striped anything. Seriously. It’s becoming a problem. My closet is starting to look like it was raided by a bunch of sailors with OCD. The issue, I find, is that stripes are the easiest pattern to wear. I have a fear of looking like one of those ladies wearing so many motifs that they end up looking like a walking a Christmas tree with tits. But, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ve taken this habit too far and it’s time to expand my horizons. In an attempt to wean myself, I’ve started looking at variations of the stripe, namely the “drunk stripe”—or zig-zag to the rest of you. Now, the zig zag pretty much belongs to “Missoni,” so I’ll  start with that pipe dream and work my way down to the simpler stuff I can actually afford.

Clockwise, l-r: MISSONI ALTEA WOOL-BLEND COAT, $2,830.00, Net-A-Porter; ARO EMILY ZIG-ZAG OPEN V-BACK SWEATER, $160.00, Saks Fifth Avenue; JOIE ASTARA PRINTED SHEER SILK BLOUSE, $208.00, Nordstrom; MARC BY MARC JACOBS AIRMAIL JAGZ VELVET LONG CLUTCH, $278.00, Zappos.

Being a Slouch
November 11th, 2011 By

I don’t wash my hair too often. I like to say that it’s because I believe it’s better to retain your hair’s natural oils, but really it’s because I’m lazy. And in the winter, forget it. It’s just too cold to deal. So, when your hair isn’t always up to par for public view, there are two options: hair powder, or a hat. The former is something I try every so often, but I haven’t really gotten the swing of it so most of the time I end up looking like an extra in Marie Antoinette. The latter is much more manageable. Plus, when it’s chilly out and your head looks like you slept inside a Popeye’s bucket (their chicken is delicious), there’s no better place to hide than inside a warm, floppy knit hat. I practically live in those things: In fact, it’s safe to say my apartment is almost the same size as your average skull.

Clockwise,  l-r: EUGENIA KIM MARLEY CHUNKY CUFFED SLOUCHY HAT, $187.00, Shopbop.com; SLOUCHY KNIT HAT, $19.95, Gap; MARC BY MARC JACOBS TITO HAND KNIT HAT, $88.00, Neiman Marcus; PINS AND NEEDLES PRETTY YARN BERET, $29.00, Urban Outfitters.

So I’m really lazy.
What of it?
November 1st, 2011 By

Contrary to what you might see on the Rachel Zoe Project, I have a theory—a theory that’s been proven over the years—that it really doesn’t take editors all that long to get dressed. Maybe 30 seconds less than the average Joe. Arguably, this is because we have deep closets at our disposal (although, this can make the process more confusing and complicated unless you adhere to strict color-coding closet guidelines, ahem) and also because we spend a lot of time during the day getting paid to muse about what combinations look right. It makes sense that all that deep thinking would infiltrate the morning noise. I would also argue that while we tend to pay attention to the season’s “trends,” we all know that there are so many trends, it’s actually meaningless…and so pretty much stick with what we know works for us. This season, I’m really all about kind of fancy sweatshirts. Seriously. I maintain that you can dress a little bit like a slob, throw on some big necklaces (one short, one long) or a brightly colored shoe, and still look totally put together. Behold, the two sweatshirts that are really getting a workout in my rotation this fall. And if you’re curious, I made a whole collection of other Tomboy selects right here.

Clockwise, l-r:AROUND TOWN SWEATSHIRT, 49.99, J.CREW; LIGHTWEIGHT FLEECE SWEATSHIRT, $110.00, JAMES PERSE; JOHN DERIAN FOR REPETTO BALLET FLATS, 295.00, OPENING CEREMONY; MARC BY MARC JACOBS “CLAUDE” NECKLACE, $258.00, NORDSTROM.

What’s New: Purple Mania March 12th, 2010 By

It’s finally Friday, which means it’s time to spend that paycheck on new goodies! The first things I started searching for this morning were brightly-colored pieces to get me in the spring spirit. Check out my fab finds in my favorite color of the moment, purple!

Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Wushishi' Sweater, $228

A long, lightweight sweater is always nice to have hanging in your closet because you can throw it over a pretty camisole or a graphic tee. I found this MARC by Marc Jacobs sweater in bright purple and fell in love with the diamond-shaped design detailing and the long length of the sweater.

Purple Crocodile Stretch Butterfly Belt, $22.00

Spring dresses can look more polished with the help of a belt at the waistline. I like this belt mainly because of the big butterfly in the front, and I like my accessories to catch attention!

Jessica Simpson Esis Flats, $27.99

Next I found these Jessica Simpson flats in raspberry. These flats would add a pop of color to any jeans and t-shirt ensemble.

Ann Taylor LOFT Purple Hair Pin Set, $12.50

To add a bit of flair to your hair this spring, I found this Ann Taylor LOFT hair pin set with purple detailing. Use these pins to pull back your bangs, or to add interest to a bun or ponytail.

For obvious reasons I advise you not to wear all of these items at once.  However, use your own judgment to incorporate the right splashes of color.  Check out other great new purple things and many other great colors too at beso!

Accessory Style File: Pretty Pouches February 27th, 2010 By

I have finally mastered keeping the inside of my bags clean and organized!  The secret is to invest in a few pouches for makeup and loose change to avoid spills, leaks and stains.  Some of us can never figure out how the bottom of our bag gets so dirty.  Loose or melted lipstick, lotion and dirty change are usually the culprit. It’s almost impossible to clean the lining of a handbag so if you have a separate bags, you reduce the chance of an embarrassing mess.  It also makes it much easier to switch bags in a hurry!  Here are my stylish finds on beso that are perfect for your daily essentials:
