After celebrating the beginning of a new year, I can’t help but want to improve myself – inside and out. I ended 2010 with a short list of resolutions that are relatively easy to achieve. However, I’m always looking to refine my image. InStyle has tips on 5 Easy Steps to Flawless Style which was very informative, and I’ve interpreted it below just for you!
1. Find Your Signature Look
To find your signature look, you must first identify your personal style. Refer to your style icons (mine are Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Richie), images from magazines, and websites that inspire you. Make a list of your favorite clothing and accessories. Pay attention to whether you prefer trendy pieces or classics such as pencil skirts, cardigans and pumps.
2. Clean Out Your Closet
Once you decide which looks best reflect your style, list preferences to help define your style in term of description (for example, “ladylike luxe” or “laid-back hippie chic”). Clean out the clothes in your closet that don’t fit the criteria. Anything that’s only worn every once in a while should be cut. The goal is to create and stick to a formula that reflects your style.
3. Make Sure Your Clothes Fit!
One of the most important elements to a flattering wardrobe is fit and proportion. Always remember to play up your best features whether you have sexy cleavage, great legs, or sculpted arms, use clothes to highlight your best features.
4. Choose Your Colors
Everyone can wear color – it all comes down to finding the right hues for you. The shades that suit you depend on your skin tone, the color of your hair and eyes.
5. Get a Great Haircut
The right hair style flatters the shape of your face and emphasizes your features. Make sure to get a cut you can manage yourself. If you’re in D.C., check out Corte Salon; and our editor swears by celebrity favorite Nine Zero One in Los Angeles.
