Seeing Red: Red Lipsticks You’ll Love April 7th, 2011 By

Fashions come and go, but red lipstick is the type of iconic style that never disappoint.  Guerlain, M.A.C., tarte – these are just a few of our favorite lipsticks.

When Guerlain went about designing the spectacular case for their Le Rouge G de Guerlain lipstick, they called in one of the most notable jewelry designers from the Place Vendôme in Paris, Lorenz Bäumer.  He designed a 2-piece lipstick compact: click 1 reveals a mirror; click 2 reveals the lipstick.  Finally, Guerlain has exquisite packaging to match the exquisite product inside that is long-lasting, fully saturated, and beautiful to the max.

M.A.C. is known for their wide range of colors and high impact pigments.  Plus, 100% of their M.A.C. Viva Glam lipsticks go to charity.

Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint is “a natural lip stain that is clinically proven to increase lips’ moisture content by 6000%.”  Sold.  It’s an added bonus that tarte stains have fabulous pigmentation, staying power and environmentally conscious packaging.  What’s not to love?

Monthly Inspiration: February 2010 February 1st, 2010 By

The Editor in BurberryLast night I had the privilege of attending the 2010 Grammy Awards in downtown Los Angeles.  This was my first awards show, and it was such a treat!  Aside from amazing performances by Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Elton John, Pink, and Bon Jovi, there was also a special tribute to Michael Jackson.  Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson all took the stage to honor the late pop star, and the power of their voices was simply overwhelming.  The Michael Jackson tribute included snippets from the film This is It!, and it was all in 3D!

Music aside, the fashion was out of this world!  And I’m not talking about the celebrities.  Since I’m not A-list (yet), our seats were up in the risers with all of the other guests looking down at the stage.  Seated around me were some of the most beautiful and daring outfits I’ve ever seen.  And I’m not talking about this.  I’m talking about fabulous tuxedos accompanied by lacy floor-length gowns, glittery mini dresses, and lots and lots of red lipstick.  Unfortunately, there was a strict no-camera policy, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

Sneaking a photo from my phone during the 3D Michael Jackson Tribute

I decided to go with the purple one-shoulder dress (thanks, facebook fans, for helping me decide!) with black opaque tights and five-inch platform gladiator heels and my black Chanel 2.55.  But what I think really made my outfit was the pair of jade and gold earrings that were generously loaned to me.  I loved the contrast between of the royal purple and jade green jewel tones.  My dashing date looked smoking hot in a Cesare Attolini velvet bow tie and Gianluca Isaia tux.

After being surrounded by so many unique and beautiful people, I’m definitely feeling inspired this month to be a bit more daring with my own style.  Next up on my list: updating my wardrobe with lace tights (up until last night I just didn’t see how they would play out in the real world), and perhaps a new tube of Hollywood-worthy red lipstick.

How to Wear: Red Lipstick November 10th, 2009 By

Ready, Set, Red!

Ready, Set, Red!

What’s the difference between a smoldering,  sexy pout and looking like a 2 bit tramp? These tips:

1) Play up your lips or your eyes, but not both. In fact, if you want to paint your lips red, all you need is a little bit of neutral shadow and mascara on your eyes. You can line the top, outside corners if you’re feeling extra fancy. But that’s it.

2) Use a lip liner. Lip liner, applied before lipstick, will keep the red from feathering out onto your skin. It also increases staying power. Lining your lips on the inside (versus around the outside of the mouth), will also keep your smile subtle and sexy instead of big and garish.

3) Choose the right color for your complexion. If your complexion is pink, you’ll look better in plum shades, while girls with yellow undertones are flattered by warmer reds that have a brown base, according to celebrity makeup artist Jemma Kidd.  Another thing to watch out for is the eyes: the right shade of red will make the color of your eyes pop!

4) Blend. Don’t be afraid to layer colors until you create the perfect shade. Marilyn Monroe famously blended 5 different colors to create her trademark pout. Play around until you’ve mixed the perfect palate. Experiment to find what suits you best. Start now so you’ll know exactly what it takes to give yourself the perfect femme fatale look for all those holiday parties.
