I was at Sephora the other day with my best friend looking for some mascara when I had the sudden urge to seek out the darkest lip color I could find. I had my friend and one of the makeup artists help me in my search, but every time they pulled a color for me I kept thinking, “darker“.
I remember seeing this trend back in 2008 at the YSL show and though I wanted to cross over to the dark side, I was scared of looking like a gothic teenager. The models were sporting pale skin, sleek black bobs, and err… black turtlenecks that made them look like part of the Star Trek cast (albiet a high fashion version). Needless to say I stuck with a safer deep burgundy alternative and a less futuristic get up.
Now that I am a bit wiser in terms of fashion (straight from the runway looks don’t always translate to real life) I know how to wear a black lip without looking like I’m in the wrong time zone, or worse, like Edward Scissorhands.
