Rob and I went to Dwell on Design yesterday—an annual trade-show put on by the magazine in Los Angeles, where you can check out pre-fab homes, every manner of fixture, furniture designers, solar panel fabricators, and home accessories galore. We were breezing through a sea of faucets when I saw a wall of neon-accented home goods (hammers! planters!) in the distance and pretty much pushed everyone out of the way to get there. I was manhandling a fuchsia-accented Klein tool bag tote (at last count, I have 10 of these, and use them as makeup and craft bags…they’re designed to sit so they stay open, which is handy…they never fall over)—when I looked up to see Valerie Killeen, one half of one of my favorite blogs ever, Bleach Black. These guys have amazing, original taste—and are fantastic, inventive, DIY-ers. I hadn’t seen Valerie in years, and in the interim, missed the fact that she started a fledgling side blog called Shelter Black, which is now, as of a week or so ago, a home accessories collection that she launched with her boyfriend. I love how they’re DIY-ing super-utilitarian home goods, and then selling them at way reasonable prices. And they’re building furniture, too. Pretty awesome, don’t you think?
