    Quality Mending Co.

15 Prince St., Nolita, New York City
    212-334-5334

Situated on a corner in Nolita, Quality Mending Co. has curated the men's classics—faded flannels, cool concert tees, scuffed workboots, deadstock canvas slip-ons—but they also reward a more romantic view of the past: I've found a WWI leather vest worn in the British trenches, French cotton nightshirts and Japanese indigo patchwork quilts in the mix. You can also shop their Americana and military-inspired private label pieces, including Canvas Carryalls ($68-$198) and a rainbow of Cable Knit Ties ($58). It's quite the step up from teenage thrifting days.SHOP NOW >

    Project No.8b

38 Orchard St., Chinatown, New York City
    212-925-5599

For men that believe style should be cerebral as well as sartorial, one look through the glass walls at the gallery-like setting of Project No. 8b—the brother store to the original Project No. 8—should tell them they're home. After all, it really sticks out amongst a swath of downtown New York City retail that's primarily composed of cellphone stores and fish markets. The all white Chinatown space is the perfect backdrop to Various Projects Silk Ombré Tie ($115), a clever Metal Link Watchband Ring from Maison Martin Margiela ($250) and a sleek, stunning selection of design legend Braun's Timepieces and Desk Accessories ($44-$375). You can also visit their Midtown satellite at New York hotspot Ace Hotel, where they sell alongside indie darlings Opening Ceremony.SHOP NOW >

    INA Men

15 Bleecker St., Nolita, New York City
19 Prince St., Soho, New York City
207 W. 18th St., Chelsea, New York City
    212-228-3844

New Yorkers have it hard: they've got the most shopping options and the least closet space. INA Men, a designer consignment boutique with multiple locations (Chelsea, Soho, Nolita, etc.), is where that dilemma is resolved—and, due to their stellar selection, often reiterated. For men that believe well-crafted, creative clothing transcends seasons or for those who've grown tired of seeing the same trends in every store, INA Men brings surprise back into the shopping experience. They've taken the thrill of the hunt to their website, where you can find future collector's items such as an Alexander McQueen Two-Button Suit ($230) as well as designer classics like a Gucci Canvas Tote ($356), or a Prada Plaid Leather Wallet ($250) for great prices. Get your hunting cap on (you may even find one of those there someday).SHOP NOW >

    Nike Sportswear

21 Mercer St., Soho, New York City
    212-226-5433

Is it possible for a brand to be a classic and an innovator at once? The Nike Sportswear store, which shares an impressive yet under-the-radar Soho block with fashion cool kids VPL, Surface to Air and Alexander Wang, has an impressive head start in the race to impress jaded New Yorkers and sustain global dominance. It's not just the Swoosh that grabs you—it's the dynamic, detailed wares in a vibrant, ever-changing atmosphere that's equal parts art installation and advertising. Don't miss the tonal grid pattern and color blocking update on the Beta Tech Destroyer Jacket ($71.97) or the sporty sophistication of cotton Chambray Terrain Shorts ($59.97) coated to face the elements and finished with a bonded zipper stow pocket. As for the shoes (and it's gotta be the shoes!) you'll have to visit the New York City store to see for yourself—the most distinctive designs sell out almost as soon as they hit the floor.SHOP NOW >

    Blind Barber

339 E. 10th St., East Village, New York City
    212-228-2123

For all the excitement the city promises, the most thrilling part of being a New Yorker is finding a spot that feels like you're getting away from it all. Situated on the northeast corner of the East Village's Tompkins Square Park, Blind Barber is an old-fashioned barbershop made for the modern man, serving up hot shaves by hand and stylish haircuts—they've mastered the modified mid-century style (think Boy Scout with attitude) that owns these streets. Walk through the all-white environs and enter the golden glow of a speakeasy cocktail lounge: Prohibition is over, but since you still can't buy a drink online, Blind Barber brings you an inspired line of men's grooming products, such as a Wild Watermint Gin Shave Cream ($24) and 90 Proof Hair Pomade ($22) as well as their Tompkins Scented Candle ($88) created in collaboration with forward-thinking fragrance design studio Joya and housed in a vintage-style "Barbicide" jar.SHOP NOW >

    Modern Anthology

    68 Jay St., Dumbo, Brooklyn
    888-681-2018

The rumbling you hear in DUMBO isn't just the train clattering through the Manhattan Bridge overhead—there's fresh retail cropping up at the edge of downtown Brooklyn. What's old is news at Modern Anthology, a Brooklyn "creative agency and retail lab." American manufacturing is not a thing of the past here; their refined rustic wares can be mapped all over the US from New York to Oregon, and encompass everything from D.S. & Durga Cologne ($89-$96) to Tsovet Watches ($350 -$497). The home picks are great too—there are Loving Cups (trophies you can share a drink out of), lighting crafted from salvaged toy tractors and trucks, and nautical lamps. The Modern Anthology site isn't fully e-commerce—but it's shoppable nonetheless, and worth the extra effort.SHOP NOW >

    Hickoree's Hard Goods

    109 S. 6th St., 2nd Floor, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
    347-294-0005

Just because you're a man doesn't mean the joys of boyhood—when every store was a playground—are too far behind. In a signature Brooklyn style, this second-floor Williamsburg shop has a playful of-the-moment take on drygoods store nostalgia. What sets Hickoree's Hard Goods apart is a pretty great mix of Americana and indigenous crafty cool, including a unique Block Print Indigo Chambray Shirt by Folk ($299), a Universal Works Croyde Short Sleeve Buttonfront in a 1950s-sourced print ($158), Thorogood Roofer Boots from Wisconsin ($150), and a Shabd Kaleidoscope Tee hand-dyed locally ($66). There are also fun discoveries such as NASA Astronaut Ice Cream ($3.50), premium Mitsubishi 9800 Pencils 12-Pack ($19), Rite in the Rain All-Weather Mini Notebook ($2.50), and Wiffle Bat & Ball Set ($5). 225 Smith St., Cobble Hill, Brooklyn
    718-855-4295

If you're looking for an effortless wardrobe with echoes of Dennis Hopper's 1969 classic film Easy Rider, you'll want to click on over to Brooklyn's Smith & Butler. Named for the intersection where the store sits, this shop has a mellow but manly vibe that blends American workwear classics, casual French staples and softly worn sportswear. Highlights include a colorblock Crazy Pocket Tee made in Pennsylvania by Left Field ($60), an exclusive selvedge denim Smith + Butler Utility Jacket done in collaboration with San Francisco-based company Tellason ($198), or a subversive spin on Hawaiian print in Heritage Research's Saigon Crazy Shorts ($144).
