Beso Contributing Editor Crystal Meers knew that a week at The Ranch at Live Oak in Malibu, California would mean trading her double-latte-and-croissant breakfasts and marathon Google sessions for break-of-dawn wake-up calls, half-day hikes, vegan cooking, and seven days in sweatpants—and she still decided to go through with it.
Here, the 11 resolutions Crystal Meers is bringing into the new year,
inspired by her time on (and off!) the trails.
- 1
I will always eat breakfast.
Sometimes I throw steel-cut oats and a mix of almond milk and coconut milk in the slow cooker before I go to sleep so I can wake up to a bowl of awesome.
- 2
I will walk (even though I live in L.A.).
No one likes the looks of a pedometer on zero. This handy little device may be hard to detect, but it's secretly chiding me to get up and move.
- 3
I will drink more water.
Though I refuse to wear a hydration pack again unless I'm deep in the mountains, I'm going to be pushing the liquids. For everyday life, a good-looking Takeya water bottle will do.
- 4
I will try to touch my toes everyday.
A few forward bends and neck rolls keep circulation up and stress levels down.
- 5
I will have more greens.
When I can't eat more greens, I will drink them.
- 6
I will stop mocking performance socks.
After five days of five-hour hikes and not a blister in sight, I might even build a small shrine in honor of these Wigwam hiking socks.
- 7
I will get more sleep
(and watch less Law and Order).Law & Order may be a siren song, but cozy Matteo Linens bedding is proving to be a helpful ally.
- 8
I won't leave home without a pack of handy wipes.
These Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water Clothes don't just save the day—they actually make it cleaner, fresher, better.
- 9
I will always have a camera in tow.
Only so many people will believe you when you tell them about the bunnies at The Ranch that show up at dusk to say hello. My Canon S95 provides verifiable proof.
- 10
I will take the time to make mundane things seem special.
Even boring things like Chinese take-out or folding laundry can feel like fun rituals. (I have a few extra minutes on my hands since I learned the world is OK even when I'm not checking email every .15 seconds.)
