the 10

everyday essentials

We're beyond obsessed with Lena Dunham's super-smart HBO show Girls, which follows the careers, love lives and well, unintentional experimentations with crack (watch the episode if you haven't: It's T.V. gold) of four twenty-somethings trying to make it in NYC. Costume Designer JENN ROGIEN, the superwoman behind assembling the looks for the cast, has dressed pretty much every woman we want to be friends with (hello, Tina Fey!). She spends her day running from fittings to boutiques to flea markets in order to ensure her clients look perfect on- or off-screen.

Here, the 11 everyday essentials that keep Jenn going through her nonstop days.

  • 1

    Canon Powershot in orange

It's light, it's orange and it takes a great fitting photo.

  • 2

    Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm

I'm addicted. I also use the Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream after long days handling pins and fabric.

  • 3

    Moleskine Softcover Ruled Notebook

I start a new notebook for every show. I have to write everything down to actually accomplish it. Checking something off the list is so gratifying!

  • 4

    A Nalgene Water Bottle

I drink liters of water every day so I tote around an old school 32 ounce wide mouth bottle that I bought in Stanley, Idaho when I was in college. Coincidentally, mine is also orange.

  • 5

A Sturdy Bag to Tote Everything Around

For everyday I carry my Joanna Maxham Castaway Bag in Mystery Grey that holds it all and looks awesome doing it. For shopping days where I need my hands free I carry my kelly-green and navy Cambridge Satchel. The bright green is awesome for a long day in the stores.

  • 6

    PilotB2P Recycled Bottles Pen

Nothing fancy—it writes smoothly and helps take a little bit of plastic out of the landfill.

  • 7

    A Quirky Cocktail Ring

Rings find me while I'm out shopping for character jewelry. Some of my all-time favorites are from 21 Tara (a Tibetan store in my Brooklyn neighborhood), Kenneth Jay Lane, and vintage costume jewelry dealers at The Brooklyn Flea.

A Fancy Shoe Bought for a Bargain at DSW

Current favorites are a Givenchy leather buckle sandal that I got for a crazy great price. I'm a VERY loyal Rewards member.

  • 9

    Black Mascara

I love the classic pink and green tube of Maybelline, but I also love a splurge like Estee Lauder's Sumptuous Extreme. I absolutely cannot leave my house without it.

    PG Tips Classic Black Tea

Iced in the summer; hot in the winter - always with a tiny splash of half & half and a dash of local honey. It keeps me going, and is a little treat in the afternoon.

    A Pair of Mundial Scissors

I have separate scissors for crafts, paper, and fabric, plus a crazy pair of patternmaking shears that look like a weapon. Mundial scissors are the absolute best.
