When summer temps in New York City hit their sweltering highs, you'll usually find book editor JENNIFER SCHUSTER (she shapes some of the most compelling style tomes and celebrity memoirs for Harper Collins imprint, It Books) camped out in one of Central Park's shady spots. Jennifer is nothing if not wise, and so she knows exactly how to craft her own little oasis, ensuring that she stays cool, looks good, and gets some reading done, even when she's technically off the clock.
Here, the 11 things Jennifer Schuster takes to central park in the summer.
- 1
Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet
The Nook is my favorite for on-the-go reading, which is especially important for all of those manuscripts that I read. It's light and easy to take with me, and the screen works well in the sun.
- 2
iHome Rechargeable Mini Speakers
You never know when a quiet day of reading in the park is going to turn into a social event. I love plugging my iPhone into these and turning up some tunes.
- 3
Ray-Ban Bubble Wrap Aviator Sunglasses
These are my go-tos, and always on-hand in the warm weather.
- 4
Glamour Magazine
Full of fun articles, fashion and style tips, and a little bit
of everything. - 5
La Marca Prosecco di Conegliano
For when my friends come!
- 6
Neutrogena Sheer sunscreen, in SPF 45
I wear this sunscreen every day in the spring and summer! It's so light it feels like my regular moisturizer, and I like to protect my fair skin.
- 7
Tory Burch Indio Scarf
When the sun begins to set, it can get cool quickly. I always throw a bright, oversized scarf in my bag to fight the chill and look chic.
- 8
Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Skinny Dip
The color is really pretty and light—really, just a touch pinker than natural, and it keeps my lips moisturized and protected while I'm in the sun.
- 9
Marc Jacobs Nylon Tote
This is the perfect bag for a day in the park. It's big enough to carry everything you need, and there are great side pockets to keep it all organized. Plus, the bright stripes are perfect
for summer! - 10
A Book for Pleasure
Even a book editor likes to read for fun! Right now I'm reading Just Kids by Patti Smith. I've heard it took her something like 10 years to write this book, and judging by the beautiful and precise writing, it was worth the effort.

Naturalizer 'Akia' Metallic Gladiator Sandals
Dressed up sandals are the best for a park day. You can slip them off and go bare foot, but if you end up making last minute plans to meet friends for drinks after, you're all set. These can take you from relaxing on your blanket to
evening cocktails.
