Jodi Shays, Founder of Queen Bee Salon & Spa

the 10
things that help me decompress

While launching a mini spa empire may sound heavenly (unlimited facials comes to mind), to hear Queen Bee Salon & Spa owner JODI SHAYS tell it, it's actually pretty taxing work (her popular spot does specialize in waxing). Not surprisingly, Jodi—who just opened a second Los Angeles outpost in Brentwood (the first resides in Culver City)—has a cheat sheet for relaxing after hours.

Here, the 10 things that help Jodi Shays decompress.

    Natural Calm Magnesium Supplement

This is my anti-stress drink! Ok I lied, my real anti-stress drink is actually a good single malt Scotch, but Natural Calm is actually really, really good for you. Last year, I complained to a nutritionist friend that by midday I couldn't keep my eyes open. She knows how stressful my life is and that I rarely take time to look after myself, and since she figured my magnesium levels were low, she instructed me to start drinking this every night. I had no idea about the importance of magnesium. I've been drinking a little cup every other night and now spend my days bouncing from event to event without hitting the wall!

    Chanel Natural Lipliner and Glossimers

I've been using Chanel lip liners, lipsticks and glosses for 25 years—or ever since my aunt handed down a used tube of Chanel lipstick when I was a teen. I dug that tube of utter fabulousness out with a q-tip until I couldn't get anything else out of it! Even when I just have time to throw on the natural lip liner and a light Glossimer I feel just as dressed up as I would with my full face on! Doesn't hurt to put a dab of Chanel #5 behind your ear either.

    Bollinger Champagne

Bette Davis once said, "There comes a time in every woman's life when the only thing that helps is a glass of champagne." I'm inclined to believe this quote. There's nothing quite as crisp and lovely as a glass of good Champagne.

    Japonesque Ergonomic Pointed Tweezers

I love these tweezers!!! I've been using them for years because their ergonomic design is perfect for a gal who uses her hands all day. They're also very precise, which is great for when I am pulling a stubborn ingrown hair out of somebody's bikini line.

    Epicuren Enzyme Facial

This is probably the number 1 requested facial at my spas since it's well suited to every skin type and age. I can feel the enzymes gobbling up dead skin cells when the first layer goes on, and the tightening and purifying masks leave you glowing for days. If I've been burning the candle at both ends, this is the facial I go in for to get my glow on!!

    Fiorentini & Baker Biker Boots

I for sure know that when I throw my on my F+B black biker boots, it's going to be a good day. I've paired them with both a Valentino skirt and my oldest, ripping-at-the-seams jeans. There is no brand that really comes close to these. Sure they're pricey, but they will last you forever.

    Ashley Koff R.D.

Ashley got me kick-started on my path back to health this year when I started to feel very lethargic and ill. Even our dog Pippa was getting better balanced meals than me. In my house, Ashley's book Mom Energy has become my bible. It taught me to go back to how I used to eat before I had a child and two spas to run. Now I know what snacks/food I should eat and at what times of the day. I have honestly never had this much energy—in fact, I have more energy now in my 40s than I did in my early 30s!

    Sanitas Skincare's Anti-Aging Products

I take skincare very seriously and am not easily fooled into buying products that promise "The Fountain of Youth." I like and demand results. Sanitas is a biogenic skincare line out of Colorado that's paraben and preservative free. I won't go anywhere without their Vitamin C Serum and Peptiderm Moisturizing cream. This company screams results and I love their no nonsense approach to skincare.

    Bar Method Brentwood

I don't belong to a gym and I get zero time to work out. However, I am hooked on these classes. At first I laughed at the two and three-pound weights that are set out in the middle of the room. I thought it was a joke—until I took my first class and got the shock of all shocks! Ouch! After a couple of weeks of doing this one hour class two or three times a week I've noticed a major change in the way I carry myself. My arms are becoming leaner and meaner and my rather large British bottom seems to be uplifted. Bar Method is a miracle for me.

    Pure Fiji Coconut Sugar Rub

The key to healthy looking skin and an important aspect of cell turnover is exfoliation. I use a good body scrub every other day. This line is made on the islands by locals and you only need the smallest amount of scrub for your whole body. The scents are natural and smell unbelievable. This is probably one of the most indulgent things I do for myself—and so I do it often!
