While climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania several years ago, designer, traveler and social entrepreneur Matthew Clough was struck by the fact that his porter, Benson, didn't earn enough money to send his children to school. The experience inspired this L.A. resident to start his company Stone + Cloth, a collection of well-designed backpacks that supports the education of children in Africa (the featured style is called The Benson, naturally).
An avid backpacker and dedicated dreamer, here are the 11 items that Matthew Clough turns to everyday, in order to stay inspired, and make a difference in the lives of people who need it.
- 1
Toms Windward Polarized Sunglasses
Polarized lenses, classic shape, One for One.
- 2
Stone + Cloth The Benson Backpack
This has a padded laptop sleeve and fits everything I need for the day. Plus, its purchase supports a child's education in Tanzania, Africa.
- 3
Field Notes No. 2 Woodgrain Pencils
Super simple, and well branded. The perfect pencil to sketch with.
- 4
J. Crew Slim Button Down Shirt
I haven't met a better fitting shirt—it's particularly good in the washed Thomas Mason fabric. I wear these so often that friends joke it's my "uniform."
- 5
Nalgene Narrow Mouth Water Bottle
Gotta stay hydrated, and there's no better way than with a narrow-mouth Nalgene.
- 6
Moleskine Classic Ruled Notebook
Putting my thoughts on paper allows me to generate new ideas and think clearly. It also fits in my back pocket so I can take it anywhere.
- 7
Moosejaw The Jose Yero Zip Hoodie
A zip-hoodie from Moosejaw will always be a must.
- 8
iPhone 4S
I prefer a moleskine notebook and a phone that's out of batteries, but this still made the list.
- 9
Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tube
I can't even think of any competitors.
- 10
Linus Bikes Roadster Classic
Inspired by 1950's French messenger bikes, this is the perfect commuter. And the price is right.
- 11
Levi's Made & Crafted Tack Slim Jeans
I wear a black pair of these everyday.
