Nate Berkus, Interior Designer

the 10
things that matter to me

It's fair to say that when NATE BERKUS came into our lives via Oprah, he had us at, "Hello"—and we've been raptly and happily watching him build his home design empire ever since. With a newly released book, The Things That Matter, Nate illustrates all the principles of his signature style, which pretty much comes down to surrounding yourself with things that you love, and things that allow your home to tell a story. And now, not only does he tell you how to do it, but he's arming fans with the appropriate tools: His spot-on home collection (that's not only beautiful, but affordable, too), just launched for Target.

Here, the 10 things that matter to Nate Berkus.

  • 1

    J. Crew Cashmere Cable Sweater

Classic and luxe, these are a go-to staple for my
    winter wardrobe.

  • 2

    The Things That Matter

I wrote this book to empower people. There's a lot of design information out there. I want people to know that it's their home and they should live with what they love most, with what has meaning to them.

  • 3

Fleur de Louis by Arquiste from Carlos Huber

A beautiful scent can be so powerful especially when it's subtle. It has a way of setting the tone for a space.

  • 4

    Capella Ixtapa Hotel, Mexico

Mexico is one of my favorite places to visit! I try to go as often as my schedule allows and the Capella Ixtapa Hotel tops my list of places to stay. It feels like paradise.

  • 5

Santa Maria Novella Orange Blossom Water

The original store is in Florence, Italy and I stock up every time I visit. Luckily, they have an outpost in New York. I like to spray a bit on the sheets in the guest room for company. It's one of those details that doesn't go unnoticed.

  • 6

    Gabriella Crespi Vintage Furniture

90% of what I have in my home is vintage. Gabriella Crespi vintage pieces are some of my favorites... Every piece has its own story to tell.

  • 7

    Sol Moscot Sunglasses

This company has been around for over 100 years and is still family run—how great is that? Many of the styles are from their old archives so they have a vintage feel that I just love.

  • 8

Nate Berkus Collection Oak Washed Box

I love the texture of this box. It's one of my favorite pieces in the Target collection... natural materials help a space look layered and collected over time.

  • 9

    Nate Berkus Collection Ram's Head

Every surface needs an organic or architectural shape to add interest. I love the look of this one sitting atop a stack of books.

  • 10

    Dairy Queen Chocolate Dipped Cone

Do I really have to explain this one? I have to make up for it with 10 Soul Cycle spin classes but it's totally worth it!
